Kagome
Nadoya music & dance company
Kagome
The music for Kagome was created and developed by Anne Norman, Peter Neville, Satsuki Odamura and Michael Hewes - the musicians of Nadoya music and dance company. Much of the music was born out of workshops with the dancers, inspired by their movements which were in turn inspired by themes derived from the lyrics of an ancient Japanese children's song "Kagome".
Kagome kagome
when will the bird in the cage escape?
when the sun rises at midnight
who is in front of behind?
Nadoya music and dance company is a Melbourne based ensemble established in 1993 which combines a unique blend of music styles and instrumentation with butoh movement art & contemporary dance forms. Nadoya's process of creation is collaborative and improvisation based, drawing on the creative talents of all the artists. In November 1995, during a rehearsal for their theatrical production of Kagome, the lead dancer's foot unexpectedly broke. This brought the project to a halt, forcing a planned two week season to be postponed until the following year. In the week following the accident the musicians decided to record the Kagome material. This CD is the result. The saga of Yumi's foot found its way on to track 5 & 14
